ARTIST’S STATEMENT:
“I grew up making stuff in my father’s shop, where he built flintlock rifles, fine furniture, and composed beautiful oil paintings. Grandmother (Cleo) Brawner painted still-lifes and landscapes, and would glue on a rock or piece of bark if a picture needed a little something. Uncle Frank made violins and spinning wheels. He was a little grumpy, so my brother and I would kick his tires. Frank’s wife Mary was not an artist but she made great Coke-floats and was always very tan. My Uncle Herman studied interior design in NYC and created lovely interiors for many important clients, including Madame Pauline, who owned a popular bordello in Bowling Green, Ky. Herman kinda reminded me of my father, in plaid pants. I’ve been drawing since I was a child, and except for a brief encounter with the real world of gainful employment as a graphic designer for the Kamber Group in Washington, DC., I have had the great privilege of supporting myself as an illustrator for twenty years. Fond memories of my childhood, and my spirited family, inform each of my creative efforts.”
